Who is the Washington Square Committee?
The Washington Square Committee is a dedicated group of volunteers who maintain the 15 flower beds of Washington Square in partnership with the National Park Service and the Independence Historical Trust.

Washington Square is one of Philadelphia’s five original squares, laid out by William Penn in the late 17th century as part of his vision for a “greene Countrie Towne.”
Originally designated as Southeast Square, the area evolved over time, serving as a pasture, Potter’s Field, and recreational space. In 1825, it was renamed Washington Square in tribute to George Washington. You can learn more about the history of Washington Square HERE.
The square was managed by the City of Philadelphia until 2005, when it was transferred to the National Park Service and became part of Independence National Historical Park. The square is supported by a volunteer team called The Washington Square Committee and through generous donations. As the official nonprofit partner to Independence National Historical Park, Independence Historical Trust raises and directs private funding to enhance and maintain Washington Square.

In 2018, the Washington Square Committee proposed transforming the flower beds to feature native plants and seasonal botanical interest. With fundraising support from the Society Hill Civic Association and volunteers from surrounding neighborhoods, work began to update each bed.
Today, the flower beds are maintained by volunteers in partnership with the National Park Service. In 2024, fundraising responsibilities transitioned to the Independence Historical Trust to better align with the Park Service’s mission.
